Foods You Should Eat

The guideline below will provide a good basis for a diabetic diet.

Adults are encouraged to get 10% to 35% of their day's calories from protein. That's about 46 grams of protein for women, and 56 grams of protein for men.

Protein take much longer that carbohydrates to break down into the bloodstream.

As a result protein has less effect on your blood sugar and can help you to feel fuller longer. Some good source of protein are fish, lean meats and chicken.

Whole Grains

Eat between 3 to 5 serving of Whole grains.

The gains that you should be eating are oats, barley, wheat where the full grain is used.

Food the have grain have a high concentration of carbohydrate so if you have diabetes you will need to test to see what effects eating whole grain have on your own blood sugar levels, before and after eating grains to see if your blood sugar increases.

Now-a-days most of the processed food are made with plain floor like breads, white rice and pastries. However, there are foods that still have whole grains. Bread with higher amounts of fiber for instance are generally better than those with low amount of fiber. For example: Brown rice is better and white rice  for diabetics.

Nuts, Herbs and Spices

When it comes to eating nut, try to avoid eating salted nuts and try to limit the quantity of nuts you eat. The reason is they contain a higher caloric value. But do not let the calories stop you from eating them, nuts are a great source of fiber and vitamins and can be beneficial for cholesterol.

Walnuts, almonds, brazil nuts and macadamia nuts are good choices.

When it comes to herbs and spices they are a great way to flavor your food another plus they are good source of vitamins, by adding spice and herbs you can help replace adding extra salt.

Foods To Avoid With Diabetes

The food that you should try to avoid are:

  • White bread, white pasta and pastries
  • Ready meals or processed foods
  • Take outs meals
