The dumbbell hip abduction is a great exercise to work the hip abduction muscle.

This exercise does not only work the hip abduction it also works the tensor fasciae latae, gluteus medius and the gluteus minimus.

Working out the hip abduction is a great exercise if you are football player or if you want to increase speed while running.

What is great about this exercise is that you can do it with or without a weight, by place a dumbbell on your outer thigh so you can add additional resistance. 

Either way if you choose a dumbbell or not the is a great strengthening exercise for those muscles.

How to do the Dumbbell Hip Abduction

Use the steps below to do this move correctly.

1. Lie on side on floor or mat.

2. Extend top leg down straight and position lower leg back underneath. 

3. Grasping dumbbell with hand of arm furthest from floor, position dumbbell as low as possible on top side of thigh.

4. Raise weighted leg up off ground as high as possible, keeping dumbbell positioned on side of upper thigh.

5. Return to leg to floor and repeat. 

6. Repeat and continue with opposite leg.
