Understanding the Body Mass Index and the bmi calculator

If you looking at the BMI result from the BMI Calculator and you do not understand what it means. You will need to understand the definition of Body Mass Index the number that you see is the result from a person’s height and weight.

The number that you get back is the result that help you screen for potential help health issue like gallstones, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and triglycerides, coronary artery disease (CAD), a stroke, and sleep apnea, among other conditions.

The body mass index result will fall into 1 out of the 4 weight categories: Underweight, Normal, Overweight or Obese.

The result is used to indicate body fat.

The BMI Calculator does not measure the body fat of a person, but research have found a strong connection between the BMI result and body fat percentage.

The calculator is also great tool to indicate other risk issue.

The  results will not only show potential excess body fat and weight problems but with additional tests and evaluations you can discover other problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and/or possible stroke.

Your doctor might run some other test like the skin fold test to measure which masseuse how much body fat that you have.

Understanding the BMI Formula

The BMI is calculated the same for children and adults, but for adults the calculation is not gender specific as for children and teen it is gender specific.

The calculation is the same for teens and children, but the results are interpreted using the child age and gender percentiles.

BMI Calculation

Pounds and inches

Weight (lb) / [height (in)]² x 703

Example: Weight = 175 lbs

Height = 5' 6" (66 inches)

Calculation = 175 / (66)² x 703 = 28.24

Kilograms & Meters (or centimetres)

Weight (kg) / height (m)² 

Note:  Since height is generally measured in centimeters, divide height in cm by 100 to get the measurement in meters

Example weight = 80 kg

            height = 168 cm (1.68 m) 

Calculation = 80 / (1.68)² = 28.34

The example above would fall into the category overweight.

Where do I begin?

Now if you find yourself in the category of normal but you want to lose or tone up I would suggest eating healthier and exercising by doing weight training and cardio. If you’re in the BMI category of normal don’t try to cut calories to lose weight but you should focus on losing inches and toning muscle.

Now for those that fall in the category of Overweight, Obese please speak with you doctor before you start any diet or exercise program , he or she may run some additional test to see if you're fit enough to start any exercise.

Once the doctor gives you the go ahead then go to Getting Started Exercise With Diabetes, also you should create a weight loss  plan to lose weight and body fat. Your plan should include eating healthy and exercising.
